A Swadesh list is a list of words which were originally compiled up by Morris Swadesh from 1940 to 1971, for the purpose of glottochronology (comparing 'stable' vocabulary in languages to determine their relation to other languages). Due to the fact that they contain many basic terms and ideas (such as body parts, verbs, and natural phenomena) in an easy-to-access format, Swadesh lists have become popular among conlangers who are interested in expanding their conlang's vocabulary. Similar to a Swadesh list, but not to be confused with it, is a General Service List.
