Text

  • Sulzi walked into the darkness behind the dark warrior and soon her eyes grew accustomed to the dim candlelight.
  • When she refused to eat, he led her to a cot and bade her get some sleep.
  • "When Mother returns in the morning from her journey she will show you the tasks to be performed while she sleeps.
  • Do not disappoint her."
  • Sulzi fell asleep immediately and awoke only when roughly shaken by the matron.
  • "Get up, girl! You have slept all night and all day. It is time to work.
  • Your first task is to fix my supper that I may eat each evening before I leave."
  • Sulzi arose and followed the matron to the hearth.
  • Beside it there stood a gigantic cauldron filled with peas and lentils.
  • "When you have separated the peas from the lentils you can make peasoup with parsley.
  • Then you can sweep the cavern, clean the hearth and lay a new fire.
  • All will be completed and in order when I return in the morning."
  • Faint with hunger and perplexed over the tasks, Sulzi watched the matron leave for her night ride, then sank to the floor by the hearth.
  • As she sorrowed over her situation, her hand strayed to the wedding gift still hanging around her neck and she thought of home.
  • She was soon aware of a warmth, then a glow coming from the amber pendant.
  • She took it off and held it in her hand.
  • Ever so slowly the amber disappeared, freeing the entrapped bee.
  • The bee tried it wings, then flew to her lips.
  • "Do not eat of the food of this place," it warned her.
  • "Each day I will feed you with honey and it will sustain you.
  • I am going now for help in your task.
  • Begin the cleaning and leave the peas and lentils to us." And he flew away.
  • Refreshed by his food she began her work.
  • She and the bees were well done before dawn and she wandered down by the shore.
  • Stepping into the water she took off her dress and washed it in the sea.
  • As dawn broke she heard the return of the matron and ran quickly back to the cavern.
  • The matron was surprised to find that all was completed and in order.
  • She called Sulzi to her and said, "You managed to finish your task today.
  • Go to your cot and rest. We will see tomorrow if you can manage."
  • Each evening the matron would rise, eat her peasoup and give Sulzi her daily tasks.
  • Then she would mount her silvern car and fly off to begin her nightly journey.
  • And every night the bees would return, feed Sulzi, and help her accomplish her tasks.
  • And when she had finished, she would walk along the shore, wash the dirt of the tasks from her dress, and bathe before the matron's return.
