Chapter 9 - The Tasks - da̋a̋ros दआ॓रोस्
  • Sulzi had realized the futility of a struggle and relaxed in the grip of Nesothlu.
  • She still felt no fear, but anger was rising within her at the thought of her abduction.
  • This anger kept out her fear during the journey until the warrior halted his team at the top of a rise.
  • Before them lay the vast sea.
  • Her surprise and wonder at this new sight turned to fear as the largest wolf she had ever seen emerged from the waves.
  • Only when he stood full on the shore did the team move off.
  • They headed straight for the sea, but sea and land were all one to them.
  • To her amazement horses and battle car ran across the surface of the sea toward the sunset.
  • The only difference was the splash of water instead of the thundering of hooves.
  • As she looked back she saw the wolf pacing up and down on the shore.
  • In no time at all they had reached the farther shore and halted before a large cavern in front of which stood a woman who, Sulzi noticed, resembled Talma, only earthen swarthiness was in her nocturnal shadow.
  • A pale glow seemed to come from her, more of a reflection than a light from within.
  • Sulzi was instinctively afraid of her to the point of shielding herself behind the dark warrior.
  • Stepping down from the battle car, he said to the matron, "Mother, I have brought home a fitting bride."
  • "She will not be your bride if her brothers arrive to reclaim her."
  • "No one has succeeded in regaining that which I have taken."
  • "Until now. These brothers have visited me in the sky and under the earth and I have felt their power.
  • You have abducted no ordinary bride this time."
  • "I have set the wolf to guard the way across the sea.
  • There is no power that can overcome him."
  • "Perhaps not, but I have sent my husband to guard the sea road.
  • If the brothers, perchance, succeed in vanquishing the wolf, they may yet be halted by the serpent.
  • Bring the maiden to me!"
  • Courageous, yet trembling, Sulzi was brought into the presence of the matron.
  • "Child, do you know who I am?" she was asked.
  • "No, Mother, I do not," she whispered, not quite having control of her voice.
  • "Mother, indeed! Quite the opposite as you will discover.
  • For now, Nesothlu, take her into the cavern, feed her and let her rest.
  • I will awaken her before I leave."
