Puna ("good sound", later renamed Pulu "good mouth") was created in 2009 by Arpee (jan Ape). Inspired by Toki Pona and by his earlier tokiponidos, Puna was intended for use in international communication. To achieve that goal, Arpee took a minimalistic approach: Puna uses only 9 phonemes and 18 root words. This way, he argued, people could learn the entire language in little time: "Most people can learn up to 10 words a day. Within a few days, you should be speaking fluent Puna."[1]
