Other Ancient Egyptian I͗i͗ /j/ or a vowel[1] The pronunciation of Ancient Egyptian changed much during the millennia it was spoken, and the exact pronunciation can't be known for sure,[2] therefore the phonemic representation here might not be entirely accurate. The reason I͗i͗ is used is because it was thought at one time that both /j/ and /ʔ/ could have been possible sound values,[3] and /ʔ/ is sometimes written as ʾ.[4] Note that I͗i͗ are not precomposed characters.
