Text

  • This might have succeeded had not the swan prow spoken a warning.
  • Even so, the serpent was upon them before Athnor could shoot another arrow, each head going for a brother.
  • As the wounded head came for Nestu, jaws agape, he thrust his flint-tipped javelin upward into the throat.
  • The tip found its mark and pierced the skull.
  • But the right head, too, had found its mark and swallowed Athnor who was without a weapon of defense.
  • Mortally wounded, the serpent sank into the sea, the waters were still again,
  • and the bark continued to sail toward the sunrise.
  • Nestu grieved for his brother and would have turned back but that he had no control over the bark.
  • On the third day after the struggle with the serpent, the mare woke Nestu with a loud whinnying.
  • The bark was headed for a large object floating on the sea.
  • It soon pulled alongside the carcass of the serpent, swollen belly up.
  • With his javelin Nestu slit open the belly and Athnor stepped forth onto the bark.
  • But this was an Athnor transformed.
  • He emerged from the serpent no longer the shadow,
  • but the reflection of his brother, no longer swart, but fair.
  • He laughed as they embraced and they sat together in the bark as Athnor told his brother of his experience.
  • The bark continued sailing in the direction of the sunrise.
