Chapter 6 - The Wolf - m̃a̋ile म़॓इले
  • Talma was watching and saw them as they drew near.
  • She withdrew into the kurgan and emerged with two wallets of provisions, acorncakes and mead.
  • Damvelu came out as they drew up and saw from their countenances that they were ready.
  • "You have prepared yourselves well for this quest. Take these weapons with you.
  • They are my wedding gifts that I would have bestowed yesterday."
  • To Nestu he handed an ashen javelin tipped with flint and a white shield emblazoned with a red star.
  • To Athnor he gave a bow of yew and a quiver of ashen arrows also tipped with flint
  • together with a black shield emblazoned with a white star.
  • Taking the weapons and the wallets, they secured them to their mounts and, saying farewell, rode off.
  • The way was long and they rode many days, always following the ruts,
  • without seeing another sign of life nor any change in the landscape.
  • Stopping only to water the horses and themselves, eating as they rode,
  • they eventually arrived one dawn at a rise in the land.
  • They dismounted and walked to the top, leading the horses.
  • From the summit they looked down upon a vast sea.
  • The waves caught the rays of the rising sun and seemed to cast stones of many colors onto the shore.
  • And there were the battle car tracks running down into the water.
  • But that was not all they saw. Pacing the shore like a sentinel was the largest wolf they had ever seen.
  • They had had their encounters with wolves while tending the flocks
  • but never one so big or so black as this one.
  • Even from where they stood he seemed larger than any bull in Damvelu's herd.
  • In the moment that they saw the wolf, he became aware of their presence
  • and turned to stand between the ruts.
  • As he faced them, they saw that he had three eyes, two white and a center one of fiery red.
  • "This must be the pet of which she spoke," said Athnor.
  • "Yes, and apparently it is I who am meant to struggle with him and overcome him.
  • There is no point in delaying the struggle.
  • Stay here with the horses and if his power is greater than ours, return home and be a support for our mother.
  • Better one live son, than two dead."
