This is the lower counterpart to the ring diacritic. The ring below is used in IPA to indicate voicelessness and in Indo-European and Sanskrit studies to indicate syllabicity.[1] Note that this diacritic may be confused with dot below ◌̣ or square below ◌̻ (U+033B), especially in small font sizes.

Use Transcription system Notes
Voiceless phoneme International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) Can be replaced by ring above if the base letter has a descender.[2] The ring diacritic is used on letters representing voiced sounds, when there is no dedicated symbol for the voiceless version of the sound. It may also be used with symbols for voiced sounds to represent slack voice.[3]
