Proto-Subumpamese (???) to Proto-Kava (1900)

Proto-Subumpamese had the consonants

Bilabials: p b m f w
Alveolars: t d n l
Palatals: y
Velars: ḳ k ġ ŋ h g

Each of which could be palatalized and/or labialized. The velars could also appear as prevelars.

  1. The three syllabic nasals ṁ ṅ ŋ̇ all merged to ən.
  2. The velar ejective became q. Then kq qk shifted to qq.
  3. The cluster xhʷ became .
  4. śʷ s̀ʷ > . These sounds when a primordial /h/ sound was both palatalized and labialized. Although there was no plain counterpart, this /sʷ/ sound still retained its labialization.
  5. The schwas ə ə̄ shifted to u ū.
  6. The mid vowels e o rotated to i ə.
  7. The high vowel i shifted to ə if touching a /q/ in either direction.
  8. Primordial f shifted to p .
  9. Primordial hʷ w shifted to f v.

There still was not an [s], even as an allophone.
