Chapter 8 - The Sea Serpent - marza̋vde मर्स़॓भ्दे
  • No sooner had the three boarded than the bark turned around and, with a fair wind, put out to sea.
  • For three days they sailed, the wind filling the sail and pushing them relentlessly in the direction of sunrise.
  • On the morning of the fourth day, as land came into view, the sea around them began to roil.
  • As the bark continued to sail, the agitation followed.
  • Suddenly, a two-headed serpent broke the surface, rising higher than the mast.
  • "You are overbold to sail this sea. Where are you bound?" they asked.
  • "We seek the dwelling of Nesothlu to regain our sister and bride."
  • "We are the guardian of the way. Why should we let you pass?"
  • "We are sent by the Sky Father on this quest.
  • It is he with whom you must reckon for he has his power."
  • "His power holds no sway here.
  • Do you think that because you have overcome the wolf on the shore,
  • you can do likewise to the serpent in the sea?
  • Our strength is the strength of earth and sea and no one has contended with us and won."
  • "We will contend with you and win!" cried Athnor and let fly an arrow from his bow.
  • The arrow lodged in the neck of the left head causing the serpent to fall back a distance from the bark, but only for an instant.
  • They charged the bark, dove under, and resurfaced on the far side to catch the twins by surprise.
