Typological structure
Į̄mχɛ̱́ is mostly a morphologically isolating language.
In an isolating languages, semantical or grammatical morphemes are almost coincident with single words, and they do not change or add any flecting affix. Moreover, words can have more than one grammatical role in a sentence:
ūp build (verb) – construction (noun) – building (adjective)
The basic word order is essentially SVO (Subject-Verb-Object).
χɛ̱́ θū ɑ̀rɛ́ mū (the) person sees (a) cow
The SVO order appears to be an evolution from a previous general SOV order. The entire system is indeed not firmly fixed between both orders.
Some typological parameters are set according to the head-modifier (or head-initial) type:
- verb - object
- preposition - noun
- noun - relative clause
Other typological parameters are still set according to the modifier-head (or head-final) type:
- adjective - noun
