List all unapproved words here (alphabetically when possible for ease of searching) until they're voted in. We are always voting on how to translate a given English word. Vote in the section below this, and remember to remove the word from this list once it's either voted in or completely voted out. Thanks!

Contested words

Onan and ona

The word 'onan', with the current plural system that we have, can mean either 'man' or 'women'. This is too ambiguous. I propose that we strip the final -an from the word for 'man', to leave it as 'on'. —BF

"Onan" also makes horrible false friend. --MM

Change onan to on — 3/0 (FH,BF,MM,/0)

Proposed (probably grammatically atrocious) examples:

(Do)-ja ku pae va inna? <- How do you do that?

  • This would be used pretty much like bam. —FH

-tsel — 3/0 (FH,BF,MM,/0)
  • I am proposing this as a noun suffix which would work similarly to the genitive, and basically have the inverse meaning: geltsel would mean "wet". Using this as a copula would make for a possible "have" structure. See also this proposed sentence. The word is inspired by tseltsinh "to contain". —FH

Accepted Words

If you vote something in but for some ungodly reason don't have the time to put it on the dictionary page, please at least bump it down into this list so that it'll be easier for someone else to move around.

E.g., "red and blue" is translated as bvi dol gel.

  • Postfix notation seems very out of place re: Naeso's VSO and head + modifier order. Prefix notation could be interesting, but I am worried that it would be unclear when it affects something more than a pair of single words (two prepositional phrases, two clauses...). I'm voting for infix conjunctions for now, but I might change my vote if someone proposes a good way to disambiguate prefix conjunctions with phrases or clauses. —Jim Henry 10:12, 23 October 2010 (PDT)
  • It probably makes no sense to vote yes for postfix but I like its Forthyness. —RJ
  • Fenhl has proposed a sentence on the Sentences pages showing how a prefix "or" conjunction could be disambiguated in some cases with a subordinating/relativizer conjunction. —Jim Henry 18:44, 23 October 2010 (PDT)
  • I think prefix would work best with Naeso's existing syntax (VSO, preposition-noun-adjective, etc) and if we find that something is ambiguous, we could still introduce a feature to remove ambiguity. —FH
