Change vowel system?

I am thinking of having just 9 vowels instead of 36.

I think that would be more realistic.

I am thinking of using a vowel system like Somali's.

I am thinking of having close, close-mid, and open-mid front unrounded and back rounded vowels, and close, mid, and open central unrounded vowels.

Thus the vowels would be:

close: [i], [ɨ], [u];

close-mid: [e], [o];

mid: [ə];

open-mid: [ɛ], [ɔ];

open: [ä]=[ɐ̞]=[ɑ̈].

Same vowels, different order:

front unrounded: [i], [e], [ɛ];

central unrounded: [ɨ], [ə], [ä]=[ɑ̈]=[ɐ̞];

back rounded: [u], [o], [ɔ].
