Chapter 5 - The Visions - na̋kaþos न॓कथोस्
  • Stopping only to grab a pile of furs and a bundle of ash faggots, the twins mounted swiftly and headed for the trail of the battle car.
  • The snow was beginning to fall steadily and they urged the horses on lest the wheel tracks be covered before they arrived.
  • When they arrived snow was already filling the ruts.
  • They dismounted and spread some furs on the ground and sat down between the ruts, Nestu facing the direction of the quest and Athnor facing the scene of the abduction.
  • Athnor arranged the faggots for a fire and Nestu withdrew from his wallet the flint with which to strike the spark.
  • They waited in silence, unmindful of the snow, until the fire had died down leaving the glowing embers.
  • Then Nestu withdrew from his wallet a handful of barley grain.
  • These he threw on the embers and smoke began to rise.
  • Together they pulled their furs over their heads and bowed into the smoke.
  • Soon a great stupor lay hold of them and their souls left their bodies.
  • Nestu ascended above the clouds and, coming to the silvern car of the moon, stood before Zervedu, the night huntress.
  • "Greetings, Mother! Tell us who was the dark warrior who abducted our sister and bride!" he demanded.
  • "That invincible warrior is my son, Nesothu, the death warrior."
  • "We mean to follow him and retrieve our sister."
  • "You may follow him as you will, but you will not retrieve your bride.
  • Those who have ridden away in his battle car do not return.
  • Others before you have tried to regain those whom he has abducted but all have failed.
  • The way is long and fraught with danger. You will not succeed in passing his pet."
  • "That may be, Mother, but we undertake this quest armed with a power that you and he have not yet encountered."
  • With a cold laugh she answered, "You will find him soon enough.
  • Then you will discover whether this power of yours is strong enough."
  • At that the smoke stopped and Nestu felt himself falling from the car and returning to his body.
  • Regaining consciousness, he sat upright and opened his eyes.
  • Athnor descended beneath the earth and stood facing a crone who was seated in front of a large cavern.
  • "Greetings, Mother! Tell us where the black warrior has taken our sister and bride!" he demanded.
  • "He has brought her here to his dwelling."
  • "We mean to follow him and retrieve our sister."
  • "You may follow as you will, but you will not retrieve your bride.
  • Those who have ridden away in his battle car do not return.
  • Others before you have tried to regain those whom he has abducted but all have failed.
  • The way is long and fraught with danger. You will not succeed in passing my husband."
  • "That may be, Mother, but we undertake this quest armed with a power that you and he have not yet encountered."
  • With a cold laugh she answered, "You will find him soon enough.
  • Then you will discover whether this power of yours is strong enough."
  • At that the smoke stopped and Athnor felt himself rising from the cavern and returning to his body.
  • Regaining consciousness, he sat upright and opened his eyes.
  • The snow had ceased to fall and the sun was beginning to rise above the land.
  • Already the snow was beginning to melt and flow away.
  • "I know who he is!" exclaimed Nestu.
  • "I know where he lives!" replied Athnor.
  • "We can now return to the village and make ready for the journey."
