Chapter 4 - The Abduction - ka̋ðra क॓ध्र

• As she turned from gazing after him, her feeling of warmth and security was disturbed by a sudden chill.
• She wondered since the sun still had a distance to go before disappearing behind the steppe and his warmth still filled the air.
• When she turned toward the youths who were running after the horses ever farther from the village, she saw the reason for the chill.
• Even in the light of day, the moon had mounted into the sky.
• As a foreboding entered her heart, she beheld its cause.
• Across the steppe she caught sight of a team of black horses approaching from the moonrise and pulling a silvern two-wheeled car.
• Urging them on was a warrior whose like she had never seen, even among her own folk.
• He was as tall as Numta, but twice as broad.
• He was clothed in black leather ornamented in silver and wielded a long whip with which he controlled the team.
• On his head he wore a leathern helm covered in silver, through a hole in which a long black shock of his own hair flew out behind him.
• Immediately on sighting the battle car, Talma thought of her daughter.
• "Sulzi!" she screamed and began running toward her.
• As she screamed the battle car headed for the maiden.
• All this happened in the span of a heartbeat and the People in confusion ran to and fro.
• Even the twins, atop their mounts, were not immediately aware of what was happening.
• But as they heard their mother scream, they saw the battle car closing in upon their sister and bride.
• As quickly, they urged their horses to the rescue but the distance was too great.
• Although encumbered by the battle car, the warrior had the advantage of surprise and the team bore down upon the still unsuspecting girl.
• She, too, had heard her mother cry out and was looking in her direction to learn the cause of all the commotion.
• She saw her mother running and her brothers galloping toward her and the menfolk running for their weapons.
• Too late she heard the thunder of hooves and wheels behind her.
• As she whirled about, still with fear, she was swept off her feet and quickly and strongly, yet not without tenderness, lifted into the battle car by the warrior.
• She struggled to free herself, but his grip was strong.
• As the whip cracked over the horses she called out to her mother as the team veered away from the melee and headed toward the land of moonset.
• Nestu knew that, without weapons, they could do nothing should they catch up with the battle car, but he was hard put to hold his brother in check.
• Eventually he slowed him down and turned him toward the village.
• As they approached, the sun disappeared behind the land and the moon shone in all her radiance.
• The only sound coming from the village was the keening of the women.
• They dismounted before their mother's kurgan and went in.
• Talma was weeping quietly and Damvelu was swearing mighty oaths to follow and bring back his daughter.
• They went to her to console her.
• Holding them close to her she wept but seemed to draw strength from their presence.She looked into Nestu's eyes and heard within her heart a voice saying,
• "Did I not tell you that our children were part of a great plan?
• Cease weeping and support Nestu in what he is about to say."
• When she had ceased weeping the twins approached Damvelu who bellowed,
• "With the first light of dawn we will set out.
• I will take my best warriors and we will track him down.
• No one steals a bride from the People!"
• "Father!" He turned to the twins.
• "Father, you cannot catch them. Although you may follow the tracks of the battle car you can never match the speed of the swift ones."
• "We cannot just stay here and do nothing.
• If it becomes known that others can come into our village and steal brides with impunity, our women are not safe."
• "No, Father, we will not just stay here and do nothing.
• Athnor and I will go after them. We have our own swift ones and, with them, a chance to pursue and overtake the battle car.
• The two of us are skilled warriors and together we will be a match for the dark warrior."s
• "I will summon the men and we will prepare provisions for your departure in the morning."
• "Our preparation must include more than provisions for the journey. My brother and I must prepare ourselves in another way for this quest.
• We will leave now and return at daybreak ready for the pursuit.
• The warrior will not travel so far that we will not find him. We assure you of this!"
• Damvelu was on the point of objecting when he looked into the eyes of *Talma, in which he read her approval of the twins' plan.
• With a wave of his hand he dismissed them.
• They turned to their mother to say farewell and left the kurgan.
• That night the first snow of winter fell.
