Literal translation of the Hebrew
- 1: And God spoke all these words saying,
- 2: "I (am) JHWH your God who has brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
- 3: There is not be to you any other gods besides me.
- 4: You do not make for youself a graven image or any likeness which (is) in the heavens above, or which (is) in the earth beneath, or which (is) in the waters under the earth.
- 5: You do not bow down to them and you do not serve them, for I (am) JHWH your God, a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of fathers on children, on the third generation, and on the fourth generation, to those that hate me.
- 6: and doing kindness to thousands, to those loving me, and to those keeping my commandments.
- 7: You do not take the name of JHWH your God wrongly, for JHWH does not leave unpunished (him) who takes his name wrongly.
- 8: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- 9: Six days do you labor and do all your work
- 10: And the seventh day (is) a Sabbath to JHWH your God. You do not do any work, you and your son and your daughter, your male-slave and your female-slave and your cattle and your stranger who (is) in your gates,
- 11: For (in) six days JHWH made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all which (is) in them, and he rested on the seventh day. Therefore JHWH blessed the Sabbath and sanctified it.
- 12: Honor your father and your mother so that your days may be long on the land which JHWH your God is giving to you.
- 13: You do not murder.
- 14: You do not commit adultery.
- 15: You do not steal.
- 16: You do not testify against your neighbor a false witness.
- 17: You do not covet your neighbor's house. You do not covet your neighbor's wife or his male slave or his female slave or his ox or his ass or anything which (belongs) to your neighbor."
