Japanese is the main language of Japan. It is either an Altaic language, related only to Korean, or a language isolate.

Notable features of Japanese

• Japanese uses several different writing systems:
  • kanji, a morphemic writing system using Chinese characters (hanzi)
  • two kana syllabaries, katakana and hiragana
  • Romaji, i.e., Latin characters.
