Phonotactics or syllable structure deals with where phonemes and clusters of phonemes may occur in a syllable.

WALS divides syllable structure into

  • Simple (CV: Hawaiian, Swahili, Guarani...)
  • Moderately complex (CCVC: onset quite limited, Finnish, Turkish,Japanese...)
  • Complex (more complex than CCVC: Basque, Germanic languages including English, Georgian)

Arrernte has a very odd syllable structure for a natlang: VC(C)
