List all unapproved words here (alphabetically when possible for ease of searching) until they're voted in. We are always voting on how to translate a given English word. Vote in the section below this, and remember to remove the word from this list once it's either voted in or completely voted out. Thanks!
Proposed grammatical particles
present tense
- On the grammar page, we have voted tense suffixes out.
instrumental preposition
across
- across, through, anything that does not start or end there but is there sometime in the process.
negative
According to the grammar page, this is a verb suffix.
- See also the vote on "no".
intention
According to the grammar page, this is a verb suffix.
Proposed content words
plant
- the noun, not the verb
to go
- To go, to walk, to drive, to swim, etc. Naeso's grammar allows us to express all of these with the same verb and the right noun phrases. —FH
- Does it also have metaphorical uses like to 'go' online or to join an IRC channel? ~RJ
- Let usage define meaning. —FH
goat
evil
- I like it. It sounds very evil ;) ~RJ
- I like it, too (because of RJ's thought), but I'm concerned about how it would be pronounced to an average viewer. ~LS
beautiful
- This sounds a bit harsh, for "beautiful," but given consensus, I suppose there's no other way to go. Might I propose an alternative, with similar sounds? ~LS
- I'll vote "yes" on both until I'm convinced either way. ~LS
elephant
bridge
- For Naeso I usually follow the let usage define meaning principle, but for a change I would like to precisely define this term as a path through the air which connects two points on solid ground (and possibly metaphorical equivalents). According to this definition, some stairs are bridges, too (e.g. these are, but these aren't). —FH
- I'm concerned as to the pronunciation of the <bvya> sounds: /,b"vja/, /,b"vi,a/, /"bvi,a/, or something else? It might become hard to read (much more-so pronounce), to the average speaker/user. ~LS
to run
Before anyone proposes words for this, we should decide how we express it. —FH
- In that case, how would we even say 'go fast', if, say, one were going on... a train? 'The train goes fast' would in this case = 'the train runs'. You don't find that confusing? - BF
- Something like this would be clear from the context. Trains can't run. —FH
- Seconded. ~LS
fast
- My only concern is that, given the question of "go fast", which is shown above, what would we use for the verb, "to go fast" (not "to fast", in my opinion, but it could be Let Usage Define Meaning)? Would it be "mina tsia", which would mean, from my understanding, "to (go/leave/depart) fastly" or some "verbified" version of "tsia"? ~LS
very
This vote has been moved to the grammar page.
to marry
- No better alternative, but what if we used a version of "love" (in this case, if needed, passionate love -- Greek "eros") with a pre- or suffix for "to join"? Literally, this would be "to join love," but this might be more- or less-confusing, compared to kaminhto. ~LS
to ask
For an example see line 4 of the LCC4 torch.
- If we introduce another word like bam that means whether, we could extend this word's meaning to "ask, whether". I know that this is very close to the English word, but we don't have to make everything different from it, right? —FH
- Seconded. I'm adding that option right now. ~LS
to know
name
See also the names page.
to cut
head
- Would this be the "head" of the household, or the "head" of the body? Or does usage define meaning? ~LS
body
logic
yes
no
- I like this. It could add new meaning to the "Knights Who Say Ni" scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. ~LS
other logic operators
- "neither red nor blue" would be dzoni dol gel.
- "not both red and blue" would be bvini dol gel.
- "either both red and blue, or neither red nor blue" would be pfeni dol gel.
position
E.g., "red and blue" is translated as bvi dol gel.
- Postfix notation seems very out of place re: Naeso's VSO and head + modifier order. Prefix notation could be interesting, but I am worried that it would be unclear when it affects something more than a pair of single words (two prepositional phrases, two clauses...). I'm voting for infix conjunctions for now, but I might change my vote if someone proposes a good way to disambiguate prefix conjunctions with phrases or clauses. —Jim Henry 10:12, 23 October 2010 (PDT)
- It probably makes no sense to vote yes for postfix but I like its Forthyness. —RJ
- Fenhl has proposed a sentence on the Sentences pages showing how a prefix "or" conjunction could be disambiguated in some cases with a subordinating/relativizer conjunction. —Jim Henry 18:44, 23 October 2010 (PDT)
- I think prefix would work best with Naeso's existing syntax (VSO, preposition-noun-adjective, etc) and if we find that something is ambiguous, we could still introduce a feature to remove ambiguity. —FH
Suggestion list
If you've grown attached to a certain word or phrase and want it included in the lex, but don't have the faintest idea about what you want it to mean, list it here. We'll consider this the grab bag — other people can look here for inspiration and develop words or phrases off of the ones here, or use them in their entirety.
- pulthy
- nuvu
- jajue
- -su
Accepted Words
If you vote something in but for some ungodly reason don't have the time to put it on the dictionary page, please at least bump it down into this list so that it'll be easier for someone else to move around.
