Lexical classification by predicativity allocates different sets of grammatical categories to referential and predicative classes and requires that derivation or periphrasis adapt each class to the other's grammatical categories when necessary. The frequency of such adaptation suggests that the lexical classification that requires it is arbitrary, inefficient, and semantically limiting.
