What exactly is a "slant phoneme"? Sorry I didn't see this for a while. Usually, they're created when borrowing from a neighboring language (or languages) especially in cases of rampant bilingualism forces a language to sometimes or conditionally consider a largely borrowed phone as a phoneme (or near to one). The only real world example I can think of are [ʧ] and [ʤ] in German, which are in most dialects are essentially phonemes (but they still have a somewhat contested status). ===== | |||

Sorry I didn't see this for a while. Usually, they're created when borrowing from a neighboring language (or languages) especially in cases of rampant bilingualism forces a language to sometimes or conditionally consider a largely borrowed phone as a phoneme (or near to one). The only real world example I can think of are [ʧ] and [ʤ] in German, which are in most dialects are essentially phonemes (but they still have a somewhat contested status). =====
