The singular forms derives from Proto-Finnic ''*inhiminen'', while plural forms derives from a lost Proto-Finnic loan from Balto-Slavic ''*lauti'', mimicking the Slavic usage and became the plural form of ''iniemnię''. The suffix originally attached to this noun, ''-nię'' (← Proto-Finnic ''-inen'') is also suppletive etymologically, see below.
