The Huamish languages represent related relatives with the languages of Los Millares and Argaric Culture of the Neolithic Iberian Peninsula, among other related peoples like Turduli. These languages are distantly related to the Kartvelian languages that arrived in the Iberian Peninsula about 6000 BC - 5000 BC with possibly the Cardium pottery culture with people that carrying Y-DNA haplogroup G2a.

The name Huamish is derived from the Proto-Huamish word for 'body', *hwam.
