| Similar shapes indicate sounds with the same manner of articulation. As for numerals, the characters directly express the numbers they stand for, with a vertical bar indicating zero, a horizontal bar five, and each line added onto the ends one. Punctuation is dramatically simplified from that used with Roman characters, serving the basic functions of separating, joining, or quoting text.
