Word of the Day - Ord Dagus
Glödarblös - Will o’ the wisp, ignis fatuus
A Glödarblös is a spectral light seen by those who travel at night, especially near bogs, swamps and marshes. The light resembles a flickering lamp and if you approach it it moves away. It is said that the light attempts to move travelers away from a safe path and into danger.
A Viteberger tale talks of a young man named Yost who could not get into Válhal (Valhalla) and is doomed to wander the earth after death. He is given a lit lump of coal to stay warm in the winter. Because he is dead he is forced to live where humans don’t live, and chooses to live in a swamp. Being resentful of his fate, Yost decides to lure travelers to their doom, joining Yost in death in the swamp.
The word Glödarblös literally means “glowing puff”, from the verb glödan “to glow”, and Blös “puff”, “blow”, or “light breath”.
