Phonotactics or syllable structure deals with where phonemes and clusters of phonemes may occur in a syllable.
WALS divides syllable structure into
- Simple (CV: Hawaiian, Swahili, Guarani...)
- Moderately complex (CCVC: onset quite limited, Finnish, Turkish,Japanese...)
- Complex (more complex than CCVC: Basque, Germanic languages including English, Georgian)
Arrernte has a very odd syllable structure for a natlang: VC(C)
