History

Early settlements

The exact origins of the Tolosian civilization are unknown. The most common theory is the one described in the old myths : the original motherland of the Tolosians was destroyed by a natural disaster, and the survivors fled the country on boats, never looking back and finally reaching the islands of Tolos. The way they would have been able to fight the strong water current separating the islands from the rest of the world is unknown.

The name Tolos, meaning simply "archipelago" is thought by some historians to be a proof of this theory. So is the name of the oldest city, Om, whose name can mean "one" and "sun" (giving the city its two nicknames, the First and the Shining. According to this theory, those names mark a logical progression from the discovery of the islands to the first settlement. However, this theory is still open to discussion, especially since no archaeological or historical proofs have been found yet.

The other major cities seem to follow a progression from the North to the South, making Koǰja the most recently colonized island, and its capital Yaobwirǰja the most recent one. This means that the colonization of the islands took approximately two centuries to be completed, with Om being founded around 1200 AD and Yaobwirǰja around 1400 AD.

The Dark Era

The Dark Era takes place from 1410 AD, so after the complete colonization of the Tolosian archipelago, to 1521 AD. Its name was given a posteriori by the famous historian Seconn of Hilos (1643-1699). In the Dark Era, the political power became centralized, instead of being in the hands of family and villages' chiefs like it was the case during the colonization era. Eventually, this centralization gave birth to a Council of the Islands, which is the ancestor of both the Jomoreadoc and the Oumoreadoc since the two powers weren't separate.

In the spring of 1445, one of the members of the Council of the Islands, Vabo of Om, managed to persuade the other eleven members to give him the full powers to regulate the food crisis in Koǰja (which had been devastated by a volcanic eruption earlier that year). But he didn't gave that position of power back after the crisis, despite the numerous attempts of the Council to convince him to do so. One year later, as a new Council was to be elected, he modified the Tolosian laws to make him the only person in power, basically transforming the direct democracy Tolos had been so far in a dictatorship.

Of course, his case wasn't the first in the Tolosian history. Wannabe dictators were severely judged by the population, their eado dropping to zero, which generally resulted in either a desperate attempt to regain their prestige by giving up on their position, or a suicide. In this case though, Vabo had a lot of followers who thought he made more for the people than the previous Councils did, and still managed to keep a decent eado who gave him a justification for his acts.

He transformed most of Om, who was at the time only an over-sized and unorganized town, build the Central Palace of Om, covered all the streets in cobblestone, and generally improved the quality of life in this region and in most of the other territories. As the time went by though, his decisions became more and more detached from the reality, and the people started to distrust him. He died in 1489, leaving his son to reign over the islands.
