Culturebound party names

Some political parties on Teppala are named after concepts that make sense only in English either because a native metaphor would not communicate well or because I have simply never changed the name I used in childhood.

Candles

Named after wikipedia:cupping therapy.

Wolf in Wool

A metaphor borrowed from English "wolf in sheep's clothing", but which is curiously not used in this form.

Zenith (XLG-1)

Crystals (CRY-1)

Borrowed from the video game Mystic Quest for the SNES. Survived so long untouched because I forgot early on that it was derivative.

Leapers (LAL-2)

Internal name means "hill people", but with a second sense of the word hill describing the nature of their political empire. I decided to pick an English word and give it a second sense as well; I could have chosen any word, but I chose one that occurred in my earlier writing for something only tangentially related, a party that used a fish leaping out of the water as its logo. I will probably keep this name because using "Hill People" or Hillers would not get across the same message, since in English the word hill does not have a special political meaning.

Scopes

I chose this name for a reason I've long since forgotten, but it cannot be tied to any concept in my writing. The original name was Microscopes, showing that I originally meant it to be scientific.

Tinks

Reference to an obscure video game.

Swamp Kids

Derived reference to the slogan Give a Hoot! Don't Pollute. Join the Woodsy Team. In essence, named after a group of child superheros that was named after the US park slogan.

The Needle

Unknown but I know I was thinking of the modern sense of needle and not a pine tree.

Matrixes (3EE)

Meant to sound mathematical; earlier I called them the Grids. Both senses, however, have nothing whatsoever to do with their party politics; the name is a reference to a conlang I was working on at the time which ended up being eliminated from the story.

Phoenixes

Reference to an Earth concept, but possibly usable in the broad sense of translating the concept of resurrection.

Slopes (ZUZ)

Another name meant to sound mathematical; dependent on the Zenith to make sense.
