Like Slavic languages, this Cernelian noun is suppletive. The singular forms derives from Proto-Finnic ''*inhiminen'', while plural forms derives from ''*kansa'' "people". The suffix originally attached to this noun, ''-nię'' (← Proto-Finnic ''-inen'') is also suppletive etymologically, see below.
